Your senior year is a time worth celebrating! Over the years, you have put in countless hours of work, and now, it’s time to show that off. If you are trying to find the right time of year to plan your senior photos, I would love to help you out! As an Atlanta senior photographer, I adore working with students as they honor this milestone. Here is what you need to consider while planning your senior photos in Atlanta.
First of all, let me answer one of the biggest questions I get asked in Atlanta: Why do you need to take senior photos? These pictures will wind up getting used a lot, and the intended use is going to play a big role in scheduling. Here’s what to know:
A lot of schools will use your senior pictures for your yearbook photo. If that’s the case, you will want to make sure you get your session scheduled with plenty of time to submit it. A lot of students wind up scheduling pictures the summer leading into senior year just to be safe.
They make great graduation announcements! If you want to use your pics to let people know you’ve reached this milestone, you will want to schedule your session for early spring at the very latest.
They can also be good artwork. If these are just going on the wall, you get a lot of flexibility with the photo dates.
The time of day you schedule outdoor senior photos is important in Atlanta! The wrong time will give you unflattering and harsh lighting. The most popular outdoor option is the golden hour, which happens about an hour before the sun sets. This is when you get that really dreamy glow! If you can’t make that work, I recommend the early morning before 10. Once you start getting to noon, you’re going to deal with direct overhead lighting, which is less than ideal.
Now, it’s time to think about what you want your pics to look like. Do you want to show off the city skyline from Piedmont Park? Then, later in the day might be better, so you don’t have to deal with the morning crowds. Do you want something a bit more rustic? Then try a nearby farm during their harvest season. If your photos are inside, this isn’t as much of a concern.
Spring in Atlanta is magical for senior photos! We haven’t hit the super high temps yet, and the humidity is manageable. If you want to incorporate the flowers, I suggest scheduling your session around April.

Yes, summer can be hot and muggy, but you can still make this season work! Because the sun sets later in the day, you can easily schedule your pictures either early in the morning or late in the evening, past seven. However, summer can be tricky if you want to incorporate school props. They might be locked away for the season.

Atlanta doesn’t get too terribly cold throughout the winter, so this can be a great way to work around crowds without having to bundle up. The foliage might be lacking, but you can still get some cool holiday backdrops. If urban pictures are your preference, this might be the best time!

If you want a colorful session, fall is your time! The leaves start to show off, and you have a lot more flexibility in your clothing because the temperature is mild enough to pile on layers as you see fit. Just know the foliage does tend to be pretty unpredictable.

If you have been trying to find the right time to plan your senior photos in Atlanta, I really hope this helped you out.
