4 Reasons Why AI Photos Can’t Replace Professional Portraits

AI has crept its way into nearly every aspect of the professional world. From company chatbots to generated resumes, you’re going to find it everywhere. So, when you need to schedule new headshots, there’s a good chance you’ve wondered, Wait a second. Can’t I just let AI handle this one, too? Before you get too carried away, I would love to tell you a few things you need to consider. As an Atlanta portrait photographer, I have this conversation a lot. Here is why AI photos can’t replace professional portraits.

Why AI Photos Can’t Replace Professional Portraits

No Real Emotion or Personality

At its core, AI is working fully from an algorithm. It is taking massive pools of data and finding patterns that it can then reconstruct. So, things like emotion and personality get lost in the equation. An AI portrait might recreate your smile, but it will miss the sparkle in your eyes. It will miss the real emotions that happen right as a photographer snaps the picture. It takes all the characteristics that make you so unique and throws them straight into Uncanny Valley territory. So, when professionals see your photo, they are less likely to see your personality shining through.

Creates a Lack of Trust

Professionals want to work with real people who will breathe life into their business. When you use an AI-generated professional portrait, you instantly lose credibility. You are telling the viewer that you don’t view your career as worth the time and the money.

At the same time as I write this, there has been a larger conversation happening about restaurants generating flyers complete with fake food. The overall consensus? Clients and customers instantly lose trust when you rely on generated images instead of the actual product.

Long story short, treat yourself and your career as an investment here, and others will notice.

No Human Flaws

AI is focused on perfection. It is going to create what technology considers to be the best version of yourself. But that’s where the charm is lost. Things like flyaway hairs, slightly crooked smiles, freckles, and crow’s feet all make you you. And while you might have always dreamed about shaving away a flaw or two, it will be an instant tell for other professionals. You might think it’s an improvement, but it’s actually working against you.

Loses the Human Connection

Again, humans want to work with humans! When businesses consider you, it’s because you bring something unique to the table. Because AI can’t register emotions and will hide all of your imperfections, you instantly become less relatable to your employers. Your pose looks a little stiffer, your smile is a little duller. Even if someone isn’t consciously noting these things, it will play into their overall decision on whether or not they want to work with you.
